Opioid Crisis

The Opioid Epidemic Requires Immediate Action

America is in the midst of an opioid epidemic and Long Island is no exception. We need aggressive action to reverse the tide of opioid-related overdoses. This requires a three-prong approach: reduction in demand, reduction in supply, and treatment.

  • Demand reduction: We must cut down on the demand for opioids by reducing over-prescription, and by funding research into alternative painkillers and opioid-addiction vaccines.

  • Supply reduction: We also must reduce the supply of illicit opioid drugs. This includes proactive screening of international mail shipments to reduce the supply of illegal Chinese fentanyl entering the United States, federal litigation against opioid manufacturers, and vigorous enforcement of preexisting penal laws that prohibit drug trafficking, sale, and criminal diversion of drugs.

  • Treatment: Finally, we must focus on treating Americans who are struggling with opioid addiction. Allowing reimbursement under Medicaid for opioid addiction treatment and providing access to treatment for addiction to federal inmates are but a few of the measures that can be utilized to combat this epidemic. We should also expand the availability of medications such as Naloxone. Just as people with certain allergies often carry an epi-pen, Naloxone and other medications will save lives. There should be no fear of legal jeopardy for those who administer an anti-overdose medication while trying to save a life.

Tackling the Opioid Crisis Means Revisiting Immigration and Economic Policies

Politicians too often see different problems as unrelated, failing to see the big picture. The epidemic use of opioids is not a problem that exists in a vacuum.

The opioid crisis is closely tied to other problems, such as illegal immigration, which goes hand in hand with the flow of narcotics across the southern border, and the loss of our manufacturing base and the respectable middle-class jobs people can be proud of.

It is a moral crisis, representing a loss of hope. In many ways, it feels like the country of our youth is slipping away. But we have now a unique opportunity to change course. I will work with leadership in Washington to implement a program which takes a comprehensive, big-picture view of multiple interrelated problems, and seeks to restore our country to greatness.

You Have Choices. Choose Ameer Benno for Congress

Because we live in this great country, we can make changes. We can elect someone who will tackle the causes we believe in. Someone who will get to the root of the opioid crisis in America and on Long Island. Someone who can build solutions that address the problems of addiction and trafficking. I am that someone.
