Infrastructure & LIRR

Repairing Long Island’s Infrastructure is Imperative to Our National Security

Our country’s bridges, roads, and tunnels have for too long been neglected and are now visibly crumbling. This is not just a quality of life issue in New York, but a national security issue. For example, outdated and vulnerable power grid puts us at grave risk, particularly in and around our metropolitan areas, and yet the government fails to get things done.

Nowhere is this neglect more obvious than with our own Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) system. We have all seen the effects of equipment failures and leadership failures with the LIRR, including just this year, when thousands of people had their routines disrupted by snowstorms. How many people do you know who have been stranded because of an LIRR problem? Anyone who has ever taken the LIRR knows that there is risk of a delay or other disruption.

Rescuing the LIRR: Reducing the Taxpayer Burden with Federal Incentives and Public-Private Partnerships

The LIRR is the lifeline of our economy here in Long Island. Yet, while it rapidly deteriorates, the cost of tickets and monthly passes continues to rise. This adds to the exorbitant cost of living in Nassau County, drives businesses and jobs out of our community, and makes it nearly impossible for ordinary Long Islanders to simply make ends meet, let alone to save for the future. Despite promises of improved service, we keep paying more to receive less.

Through public-private partnerships, we can infuse the LIRR system with the money needed for these critical upgrades while reducing the burden on taxpayers. Federal incentives should be used to encourage the development of commercial properties on or near Long Island Rail Road stations, and the development of affordable residential living above the commercial establishments along the Long Island Rail Road corridors. Coupled with reforms to the LIRR’s pension system and legislation that would force transparency and accountability to the MTA, we can once again make the LIRR the engine of a booming Nassau County economy. These commonsense steps will also allow the aging and/or mobility impaired members of our community to live and remain in our neighborhoods affordably. Not only is this the right thing to do for our senior citizens, but it has a real dollar value for all of us, especially those of us who rely on our extended families to help with childcare.

Investing in Infrastructure is Crucial to our Long Island Economy

Long Island is a diverse place, with hard-working families who do the real work that keeps this country going. But, our leadership has been inept. We can do much better. Just as there is a new kind of Republican thinking which aims to protect American jobs through better trade deals, there is also a new desire to build, and willingness to spend on infrastructure. This type of spending creates countless jobs, and helps the economy thrive by lowering costs to commuters. It is a good investment.

I am fully aware that members of Congress must compete for funding for their districts. I assure you that I will not take your vote for granted, and I will fight hard to bring that much needed infrastructure spending to Long Island.

You Have Choices. Choose Ameer Benno for Congress

Because we live in this great country, we can make changes. We can elect someone who will tackle the causes we believe in. Someone who will fight to get Long Island’s fair share of funding to invest in upgrading the LIRR and other projects. Someone who will work to facilitate Long Island’s economic growth. I am that someone.

Together, we can create a better New York: one where everyone can enjoy the efficiency and safety that comes with upgraded roads, trains, bridges, and tunnels.
